Christian Obscenity: Essays, Stories, and Other Potentially Damning Ramblings ReviewI was very pleased with Scott Douglas' other work, Quiet, Please! In reading that book I was very pleased to discover that he is a conservative Christian. I was interested in more of his "library" blogs, but when I went to his website, I discovered that he had published this little gem also. Christian Obscenity is a collection of essays, stories, and other writings. I really liked the "Christian" porn-star interview, which is laugh out loud funny. Douglas proves that you can have a sense of humor, and even be a little sarcastic, and still be a Christian! I look forward to reading more of his work - I also subscribe to the blog Disturbed Christians . com which Scott is a regular contributor. The site is not to be missed!Christian Obscenity: Essays, Stories, and Other Potentially Damning Ramblings Overview

Writing the Fantasy Film: Heroes and Journeys in Alternate Realities ReviewOkay, I'll admit two things right off the bat: 1. I've never written a fantasy script. 2. I'm not a big fan of the genre. Yes, I love "Star Wars (Episodes III, IV and V)" but don't really think of them as "fantasy." The Lord of the Rings Trilogy really can't be beat and truly feel the human elements of the story transcended the "fantasy" elements. I guess my biggest issue of the fantasy film genre is that I really can't relate to it much. Whether I'm too distant, too grounded in my work-a-day reality, or just a bit too distracted to believe in Wizards, Dragons, Damsels in Distress, Magic Potions and Ogres.
Then I read this book.
Coming at screenwriting from more of a "logical" point of view I kept reading this book in hopes of picking apart the whole grasp of fantasy films. This is the book, I thought, that was going to help me make my arguments against the whole genre. What it did was teach me that Fantasy Films (adventure, romantic, sci-fi, modern world based ("BIG," "It's A Wonderful Life"), middle world based, outer world based, etc.) have many of the same elements you find in your standard genres (romantic comedy, western, action film, buddy picture, etc.). In fact, the more I read the book, the more I realized that if some of the archetypes found in fantasy films were plopped into the middle of a standard drama film - it would add an whole element that would enhance the film, not take away from it.
As Ms. Jak broke down all the elements of the Fantasy Film, from Wizards to Buddies, from Spells to Witchcraft, from Outer-Space to Central Europe - I found myself either itching to write a Fantasy Film or, at the very least, incorporate some of those archetypes into my current screenplays: "Maybe the main character has a Wizard he talks to, but he's not really a wizard, but a teacher could be the wizard character."
Ms. Jak says, early on, this book is not for beginning screenwriters but there are MANY MANY things a beginning screenwriter can learn about in the book that they could incorporate into their current screenplay (even if the story is a "buddy picture set on the streets of Hong Kong").
The book is clearly written with chapters in regards to what "exactly" is a Fantasy Film, doing the research and breaking apart the characters and situations.
One of the risks of doing a Fantasy Film is that so many of the archetypes border on the cliché (hero, maiden, witch, warlock, wizard, etc.) but what I found fun was in my own mind putting a twist on those clichés to make them different. She is both encouraging in those terms and she gives plenty of examples. She ENCOURAGES breaking the mould (and I would encourage it, too). And that's really where the fun comes in. Taking the normal and making it abnormal, twisting the clichés until they scream, finding the tent poles upon which the genre rests and then kicking them out from underneath. THIS is what makes writing Fantasy Films so much fun. You can't break the rules in a romantic comedy (trust me, I've tried). But with Fantasy you CAN break the rules, you're ENCOURAGED to break the rules - and Ms. Jak shows you how to do so.
If I have any complaints about the book, it is these:
1. After every chapter there is an "exercise" to do in regards to what you have just read. I don't know anyone who would actually stop reading this book to do the exercise. Though helpful, I'm sure, and a great learning tool - I just didn't see any reader not moving on to the next chapter so they could "write their script's story in epic poem form." These may have been better served in a separate chapter later in the book, once someone has read the book through.
2. I have found that the more I read books on screenwriting and film the more they mention certain films and/or certain websites. I hereby declare that books should now not only contain a bibliography (like this book does) but also a "cinemaography" and an "internetography" to list out both films and websites that are mentioned in the book.
Ms. Jak, especially in the section on research, mentions a number of websites she encourages the reader to visit. Then, in later chapters, she mentions more. It would be great to have a compendium of websites near the end of the book so someone doesn't have to hunt and peck later on.
Same with films. She mentions dozens of films as examples. Some contain many of the "standard" elements of a fantasy film while others are a great example of one type of conflict or one type of love story. This book would have been made better if there was a thorough listing in the back stating which films are mentioned in the book and why and listing other films to check out in the same genre. (Recently a Producer I know ripped me a new one for not seeing films in the genre I was writing.)
If you want to write a Fantasy Film, this book is an excellent resource. If you are a new screenwriter just starting out - I would give this a look, too. This book is both fascinating AND fun.Writing the Fantasy Film: Heroes and Journeys in Alternate Realities Overview

BRANDchild: Insights into the Minds of Today's Global Kids: Understanding Their Relationship with Brands ReviewMartin Lindstrom does a great job letting the reader know that the root of success when communicating with kids is understanding kids, their lives, dreams and hopes. He not only analyzes data from 7 countries, but includes his own experiences with working with kids and with kids related brands. He is able to get his point across without being boring, looking at the subject form different angles.
I also checked out the MartinLindstrom.com site. I think it is a great site, with tons of brand info related to kids and general brand trends. Well done!BRANDchild: Insights into the Minds of Today's Global Kids: Understanding Their Relationship with Brands Overview

Sequins, Secrets, and Silver Linings (Threads) ReviewWhen I saw this cover, I wanted to read this book,it looked like so much fun. (yes I liked a pink cover. Don't judge me) Meg Cabot has a blurb on the book. (top left near the sneaker) Which seemed fitting because I thought it be something along the lines of Cabot's genre. Lucky me, I was right. I have really missed reading books like this, and Sequins, Secrets and Silver Linings was very good. Being set in London was an added bonus.
Three best friends Nonie, Edie and Jenny are doing very different things. Jenny starred in her her first movie, with Hollywood's sexist couple. Edie is always looking for a good cause to support. Nonie loves fashion and dreams of one day carry a famous person's coffee.
Nonie and Edie are doing their best to support Jenny, her movie is about to premiere. Edie is tutoring 11 yr old Crow a young Ugandan girl who is living with her aunt. Crow loves fashion as much as Nonie. Edie doesn't speak fashion, but she uses this connection to help Crow with her reading. Very early on its clear Crow has a great eye and was born to design. The friends do what they can to help make that happen.
Nonie is the narrator of this novel. (the first of three) I loved her voice. It was well drawn out and real, she does an excellent job of hold everything together. As the novel progressed Nonie grew, the same is true for Edie and Jenny.
Bennett's writing was smooth, fun and funny, with great dialogue. I will admit to getting a little choked up at the end. Sequins, Secrets, and Silver Linings is deceptively more layered then it looks. Everything fits seamlessly into the story. This is a must read for any readers of young adult who love fashion. Ages 11 up

Autism and Me: Sibling Stories ReviewI have a somewhat different POV about this book than a lot of the reviewers here, because I am an adult on the autism spectrum. So I'm not looking at it so much as an educator but rather, as an Aspie. Do I see myself in any of these children? Yes. (I especially related to Jesse's fixation on phones. My special interest as a kid was insects. I still have a big collection of rubber bugs!)
This book is about siblings, but I'm not so sure that's the audience the book is really aimed at. My impression is that these sibs are trying to get their neurotypical (NT) peers to be more tolerant of their autistic brothers and sisters. Quite a few of the stories mention teasing or misunderstanding:
Introduction: "You can help kids with autism by not teasing them or letting other kids tease them. They deserve our respect."
Amber: "Some people think kids like Ravi are stupid because they have trouble learning. That makes me mad."
Amy: "[In the restaurant] Some people gave us dirty looks and we had to go home. He has autism, what's the big deal?"
Troy: [When Sam gave the announcement in school] "He talks in a high voice and people in my class were laughing at him..."
Clearly these are messages aimed at would-be bullies asking them to stop doing it. (Heaven knows, I was bullied enough back in the 1950s when Aspergers was not even on the radar. I know what it feels like.) The last story ends the book with, "You should respect people with autism for who they are." Amen.
I also don't "get" all the people here who say the stories are too syrupy sweet. I saw plenty of places where kids talked about their autistic sibs breaking things, throwing tantrums, getting into their stuff, going in their rooms without asking, screaming and making scenes in public, etc. And the sibs do admit to anger or embarrassment. True, nobody says, "Sometimes I'd like to kill my little brother" -- but then, if you are writing a book about tolerance, you don't want to focus on your own meltdown moments. I think we all know that brothers and sisters fight, get jealous, feel anger, etc. without having to spell it out in every book we write.
I also find it interesting that so many reviewers focused on the text. For me, the real value is in the pictures. Maybe this is because Ouisie Shapiro, the author, is a television producer, so she is used thinking in pictures. And Stephen Vote, the photographer, has done a wonderful job of capturing autistic children doing ordinary kid things. As another reviewer said here, if you don't read the captions and stories, it is hard to tell which child is autistic. I like that. It sends a clear message to NTs that autistic kids are just that -- kids. I love looking at these photos.
This book goes a long way toward offsetting the often negative images of autism we see in the media. Like that awful PETA "Got Autism?" billboard campaign with the frowny face in a bowl of milk, exploiting autism to try and scare people into giving up milk for animal rights. Whether or not there really is a connection between autism and lactose intolerance, I do not know, but these images are hurtful. So are all those documentaries showing autistics having meltdowns, banging their heads against the wall - -this is the picture many NTs carry of us. So the "normalness" of the photos in this book is much needed to help offset those stereotypes.
True, this might not be a book that a child would read over and over, but then, do YOU read YOUR informational books over and over? As an educational tool or a library book, it can fill an important niche even if it's not "Cat in the Hat." I can easily imagine this book being used in a lesson on tolerance. The pictures are big and bright enough to hold up in front of the class.
Now for a few complaints: Like others here, I do think the book was rather short for its price and target age group. Granted, color printing is now very expensive, but there could have been a few more stories. There also could have been some background info and resource references in the back for teachers and parents. And I found the thin script-like type font difficult to stay focused on. For these things I give it 4 stars instead of five. But all in all, I like the book very much.

Royal Doulton Animals: A Charlton Standard Catalogue (4th Edition) ReviewThe Charlton Standard Catalogues are the standard references for collectors and dealers in Royal Doulton toby mugs and figurines. All of them are excellent sources of information on specific figurines/tobies: the designer, period of manufacture, varieties of glaze and color, backstamp variations, etc. Each entry contains a black and white photo and a price guide. The downside: with four to six entries per page, the photos are often too small to make out details. Trying to figure out whether the figure you are looking up is the same as the one in the photo can be tricky. (Of course, the proper way to look up a Doulton figure is by series and number. But the older figures had their identification numbers written on them by hand, and it is often hard to tell whether you are looking at a 2, a 3, a 5, an 8, or a 9. It takes some time to eliminate possibilities and find the proper listing, and the small, sometimes dark photos do not help.) There are several sections of larger, glossy, full-color photos. But the subjects for the color photos are not always chosen for helpfulness. Do we really need six pages of color illustrations of flambe glaze? The Introduction to the book is minimal. It contains a tiny history of the production of Royal Doulton animal figures, tips on collecting, and an excellent list of clubs, dealers, and suggested further reading, much of which is out of print or published by Charlton. The more the reader already knows about Royal Doulton, the easier the book is to use, and the more helpful it will be. This is a REFERENCE book, and not an introduction to the history or appreciation of Royal Doulton. It does what it does very well. A NOTE ON THE PRICE GUIDE: Like most price guides, it is best used to COMPARE values of similar items. An item which books for $125 is worth less than one that books for $550, but neither item is likely to be sold at the book price. Common items will usually sell for below their book value, and uncommon and rare ones may sell for over their book price.Royal Doulton Animals: A Charlton Standard Catalogue (4th Edition) Overview
