A Shadow Passed Over the Son (The Go-Kids Book 1) Review*A quick note from me, Ryan, the author: the following review is an actual review from Mark Ryan, a reader I met via Twitter, who lives in the UK (as you can see below). Mark was so generous with his time and had such kind words about my book, I wanted his review to be featured on the US Kindle store too, but Mark had technical difficulties, as it seems Amazon doesn't like this and has regional filters in place. Nevertheless, it would be a shame for readers not to have an opportunity to read Mark's review, as he nailed so much of what I was trying to do in my book. So please have a read, and hopefully you'll decide to try my work. Thank you.*

A Shadow Passed Over the Son (The Go-Kids Book 1 Kindle Edition)
This novel threw me a little because it's not my usual thing. I picked up a free promotional copy from the author on twitter. It's probably better that I say what my usual thing is first. I like fast paced entertaining action, guns, power suits and monsters. I don't like anything too technically complex because that's what I do for a living. I like prose that flows and don't appreciate authors who throw too many obscure words around to show me how smart they are. If we're going to play that game I'll write a book in the several programming languages I know. I also enjoy the darker side of sci-fi; I don't necessarily mean gore and sex but anything too shiny doesn't really grab me.
Bearing the above in mind I launched into the book. My immediate reaction was one of joy as the prose flowed and while the writing was smart and eloquent I didn't need a dictionary to hand. The reader is engaged intellectually by subtle hints at a larger story and fragmented back story. I found myself rounding the story out in my head; It wasn't a conscious effort and it wasn't stressful in the slightest. The hints aren't obscure, requiring huge leaps of faith. They're just little gentle nudges expanding the novel beyond the scope of what is written.
The second aspect of this book that dawned on me is that it is probably aimed at a young adult audience and at first everything did seem a little glossy and childlike. However, thinking back there are darker elements to this story but they're hidden and steeped in mystery. The language and depth of the story being told does elevate it to a level that can be enjoyed by everyone. The childlike aspects of the novel match the character on his journey into the adult world.
The author creates a beautiful but flawed world and develops the main character through a series of small adventures and encounters. The supporting cast are equally rich and compliment the main character. It's not until you finish reading the exciting climax that you're suddenly left feeling a little cheated but delighted all the same. Why did I feel cheated? As the reader I could sense a story building but nothing really happened until the very end. The events affecting the character while traumatic happened remotely from the main thread of the story.
I then reflected upon what I had read. This is the prelude to a great series of novels, with power suits and a myriad of adventures awaiting the reader. The prose flowed so well and I delighted in the world and characters being created so much that I wanted more. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series. This is the first book I've read since I was a young child that has grabbed in such a magical way. It's written so well that it puts you in the shoes of teenager and takes you back to your naïve childhood days.A Shadow Passed Over the Son (The Go-Kids Book 1) OverviewKingdom City, New York.2047.On the eve of his 13th birthday, Parker Perkins stands in the corner of his bedroom, his back against the wall.
