Gods and Candy (Summer Solstice Part 1) Review
The novel opens before dawn in a Roman temple. We see the ritualistic battle between night and dawn (Nyx and Eos) witnessed by a statue, which is actually a young goddess who has been imprisoned inside this statue for nearly 1,000 years. The author uses such awesome descriptions that I thought I was in Rome watching the whole thing! I really liked the evident research that went into each of the immortals and their histories/powers, staying true to their myths. Of course, the whole scent was new, as was their addiction to candy. I thought it was fitting that Aphrodite was hooked on Hershey's kisses. But I fell in love with both Ares and Apollo. They're both so handsome and Apollo seems so sensitive. Ares and his hankering for ice cream is just too funny. But what I love most of all is how Ms Wagner weaves the modern and the ancient beautifully. The gods aren't old, they aren't in togas, and they are personable and flawed. There are no Mary Sue's - even the mortals are a little messed up in the head. I still can't decide who's my favorite, but I know I can't wait until the last part is out!
