Brian Nine ReviewEvery Now and then, I stumble upon a novel that swallows up the world around me to the point that I feel like I'm part of the story and the characters are old friends. Brian Nine is such a story and an accidental find, for me. I downloaded the book to my thirteen year olds Kindle and, as I always do, I set out to preview the first chapter or so to make sure there were no unwanted surprises. Well, that preview lasted the rest of the day and early into the evening as I couldn't put the story down. It's simply remarkable.
On the surface, it's the story of teenage genius Brian and his best friend Will who end up fighting for Earth's survival on another world. There's a plenty of exciting action, but what I liked most was the story beneath the surface in which Brian struggles to find his place in life and Will seeks redemption.
My son is loving the story and we talk about each chapter before his bed time. Brian Nine is one of those rare stories that reaches across generations.
Brian Nine OverviewWhen Brian's mother dies suddenly, the teenage genius is stripped of his last vestige of a normal childhood, the invincibility and limitless possibilities of youth. The exposure to mortality magnifies Brian's inner fears resulting in him becoming evermore cautious. Despite his social awkwardness, Brian forms an unlikely friendship with Will Star, a charismatic, popular and fearless athletic dynamo battling his own demons and living on the edge. While touring a new spacecraft developed by Brian's father and his team at NASA, an accident launches the vehicle with Brian and Will inside through a wormhole to the Alpha Centauri star system with no way to return home.The boys discover an Earthlike planet inhabited by the Chimera, a technically advanced race that has already enslaved the people of two worlds and which has their sights set on Earth.
