Harry Potter and the Deconstructivist Magicians (My Favorite Critical Essays) ReviewThis book is NOT a parody of Harry Potter. Not even close.
It IS a parody of existentialist, post modern, french, and especially french deconstructivist literature. Basically, if you've ever taken a class in post modern philosophy, something that covered Foucault or Derrida, you're going to like this book.
The essays don't make sense. Literally. They are literally designed to be a parody of themselves.
It's a post modern version of like How To Write by Gertrude Stein. The words are there for their euphonic capabilities. They are arranged to *sound like* post modernism, and to *seem like* they should make sense.
From the cover, and a quick glance through, this book seems like a book of dense essays on pop culture from a cross-cultural perspective. But it's not. It's a parody of those very ideas.
Makes for fun reading, especially outloud. I read it to my 6 month old daughter, and she loves it.
Would be a great gag gift for your friend in a humanities grad-student program at some east coast university.Harry Potter and the Deconstructivist Magicians (My Favorite Critical Essays) Overview
