Hollow Fields Vol. 1 ReviewLucy is on her way to a new boarding school - unfortunately, she takes a short cut through the woods and ends up at the suspicious Hollow Fields. Blinded by a luxurious room and the promise of free tuition, she signs a contract to become a student there - without bothering to read it first. If she had, she might have realized that there was something very wrong with Hollow Fields...
The set up is a little unbelievable - who sends their nine year old daughter to find her way to a school she'd never been too, with no supervision or directions? What nine year old runs into the woods in the middle of a storm without getting directions first? But once the story gets passed that, it is charmingly creepy and entertaining. Lucy reacts in a believable manner for a nine year old - acting with out thinking, blurting things out, fainting during her Animal Transplanting class (or what ever it is called when you sew two different animals together to make a new one). She is appropriately horrified by the class matter of Hollow Fields - Grave Robbing, Constructing Killer Robots, etc. - but smart enough not to make a big deal about her mistakenly coming to Hollow Fields. When finishing this volume, I was intrigued and wanted to read more about the mystery of Hollow Fields and see how Lucy would escape - or not!
In addition to an engaging plot, the artwork was fantastic. The quality seemed pretty good, but it was the designs that really impressed me. Hollow Fields and the Engineers were very creatively and creepily rendered and the students were a contrast with their 9 year old cuteness. I like art in manga well enough, but it is rare that I slow down my reading to appreciate the art. This was one of this series that made me look twice.
I've read hundreds of manga and it is rare that a first volume to have impressed me this much. So if you want to read something a little different, with a likable main character and excellent art design, I recommend giving Hollow Fields a try.Hollow Fields Vol. 1 OverviewForgetting your homework was never this dangerous!Little Lucy Snow was meant to be enjoying her first day at the nice elementary school in town; however a macabre twist of fate sees her enrolled instead at Miss Weaver's Academy for the Scientifically Gifted and Ethically Unfettered--also known as Hollow Fields.Located on the outskirts of Nullsville and run by the insidious Engineers, the grim boarding school dedicates itself to raising the next generation of mad scientists and evil geniuses!
