Blackrayne ReviewThe concept of this book -- an unethical psychologist whose birds have come home to roost finding himself embroiled in a powerful cult -- was intriguing to me. I found the character of Jason engaging, if not likable. The plot moved quickly and I found myself embroiled in the story. There were some editing issues, but these were fairly minor.
Then I hit a brick wall. I don't believe in spoilers, and I'm not going to discuss the particulars of how this book ends, but a substantial percentage (yes, I counted) of this book involves page after page of clunky Christian preaching. Not just any old Christian preaching either -- this is the Christianity where folks (especially fornicators and gay folks) burn in endless lakes of fire and God rewards His chosen with earthly prosperity.
Although the preaching is supposedly related to the storyline, the connection is tenuous at best. I found it objectionable for two reasons: First, if I want to read someone's testimony, I will choose to do that by buying one of the many non-fiction Christian books on the market. Second, as a literary device, "God fixes everything" is on a par with "And then I woke up and found it was all a dream." It's a cop-out way to end what started as (and is marketed as) a secular story.
I gave this book two stars (instead of one) because the concept and the first part of the story show that the writer has promise.Blackrayne Overview
