Menace of Club Mephistopheles ReviewMenace of Club Mephistopheles is unlike any other book I've read. It's like Mr. Redux took the hardboiled detective genre and Stephen King and Harry Potter and H.P. Lovecraft and smashed them all together. What he came up with is something that is very entertaining to read. Set in the late 1920's, private eye Dixon Peters is hired to find out what happened to a socialite's husband, who vanished mysteriously after joining a gentlemen's club called the Mephistopheles Club. Now this book is a bit quirky, and has some adult humor in it, but nothing worse than you would see on late-night TV. Dixon Peters' name is kind of racy-- and yes, he knows how it sounds! He also has an unmentionable physical deformity, but its not just there to shock people or as a joke. There is a reason. But there is a very humorous side to this book. There are alot of tongue-in-cheek jokes. There are several hilarious scenes, especially the one in the bathroom of the fine french resturant, but also some very scary scenes, such as when he confronts a demon-possessed butler. I especially liked the chapters that detail his childhood in the 1900's, and his failure as a magic student under the tutelage of a powerful magician named Arthur Grimberg. Other interesting characters are his informant "Ratty" Ramon, the blind albino seer and shoeshine boy named Delbert Whitmore, and the woman who hires him Gretchen Wagner, who is just a normal person, but has a very strong personality that Dixon can't help falling for. His foe in this bookj is also a very interesting character. I hope Mr. Redux will continue this series, as there is alot of intriguing subplots that beg to be expanded upon. The writing flows very smoothly and is easy to fall in love with. I especially like the line in the chapter where Grimberg starts teaching young Dickie magic. "The day was full of marvels... and marbles. " With its strange humor, and thrilling action and horrors scenes, that perfectly describes the whole book, too.
