Theo's Destiny (Worlds of Light and Fire) ReviewI loved this book! I don't know what I was expecting. I saw the price and figured I wasn't risking anything.
I thought it started a little wobbly jumping from a page about gods, then a preface about a baby being found in this village, and then to Pennsylvania. But that part was short and it all made sense really soon. As soon as the action started I was into it and had trouble putting it down.
The book is really epic style. I agree with the other reviewer said it was Tolkien-like, but not just some of the people and creatures. The writing is amazing and that's what I always liked about LOR. His battle writing is wild and he really mixes moods. I almost cried a couple times because the story has several very powerful scenes (I won't give anything away). A couple times the violence got kind of harsh, but not too bad. There's one "adult" moment but it was beautifully written. He's really good with characters.
Best of all is the story. The idea of Fire against Light is very good. And the way he makes those powers work. The central theme of a boy becoming a wizard is extremely well done with a shocking twist. I found myself caring more about Theo than I ever did about Harry Potter. I also can't wait to find how the two worlds relate. While the book has a Tolkien feel, it is very original.
The story is almost all in "Hoem" (fantasy world) but there are scenes in the real world. It's easy to follow. You can definitely tell that the author has traveled a lot because of the way he describes the journey and places in the book (his other books are travel books). Download the map from the link in the description and print it out if you like to follow the quest. The characters aren't always together so you can see where they all are. The map could be more detailed.
Is the next one coming soon? The book is very complete. Not like the first LOR book. But it sets up a sequel (or two?). Will it be out in print?
I think this is literally one of the best fantasies I've ever read. I got lost in it and now I want to read it again. It seems strange that it is so cheap, though it sounds like what I paid is temporary. Don't miss it if you like epic fantasy!Theo's Destiny (Worlds of Light and Fire) OverviewDescribed as "Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings," Theo's Destiny launches an amazing new series that epic fantasy fans will devour with glee. From the publisher's summary..."On a fine spring morning in a small town cemetery, young Theo Garfield faces the beast of his nightmares and is certain he is about to die. His certainty is misplaced, however, as is the confidence of the beast's master, who would see the goddess' new champion dead. So begins the epic story of an alternate Earth, mysteriously linked to our own, where the mages and armies of Fire press in final assault upon the defenders of Light."
