Under the Covers and between the Sheets: Facts and Trivia about the World's Greatest Books ReviewI agree with rabidreader that this is an unimaginative and bland execution of a good idea. I think most readers will be happier with The Literary Companion which is similar (in fact, if I were grading these as exams, I'd check to see if the students were sitting next to each other) but has a bit more style and depth. You get even more depth with Literary Trivia: Over 300 Curious Lists for Bookworms or Literature Lover's Book Of Lists: Serious Trivia for the Bibliophile, but these are halfway to being eccentric reference books rather than lightweight surveys.
Still, this book rates three stars for being generally accurate and inoffensive. No one will hate it. At the worst it sinks only to the level of Snapple bottle caps, and it frequently rises as high as "interesting." I found most of the material to be already well known, at least to the sort of person likely to read this book, and too much of the rest was boring. I don't care that Douglas Adams, who wrote The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, was friends with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd or that Elizabeth and Jessica of Sweet Valley High shrink from size 6 to size 4 between editions. This sort of fluff is made more irritating by the authors' constant hyping of bland material as "ironic" or "surprising." Despite frequent PG-rated teasing, nothing in the book is even as titillating at the mild title.
I found the coverage disappointing, big name classic Western writers, living best-selling authors and way too much juvenile fiction. There are only a few brief mentions of writers in languages other than English, Virgil, Li Po, Dostoyevsky and Kafka is about it. Occasional errors creep in, for example a list from Forbes (uncredited) of top-earning authors between June 2007 and June 2008 is labeled "Worth" rather than "Income." The authors' style will remind you of a bored tour guide unconvincingly faking enthusiasm for stories told too many times, and not that great in the first place. The index has that computer-generated look, and covers names only, which is inexcusable in a reference book, even one as lightweight as this one.
On the plus side, there are enough good bits to keep you reading, and most people will learn a few new interesting things.
